Rumors are flying around that the Padres are trying to work a deal with the Chicago White Sox and Los Angeles Angels that would send our franchise’s top player, Adrian Gonzalez, to the White Sox, Paul Konerko to the Angels, and a bunch of White Sox and Angels prospects to the Padres. In other words, the Padres lose their lone all star caliber player for a bunch of guys who probably haven’t played in the majors before.

I hate these kinds of deals, if for no other reason than the fact that it usually means a team is at least 2-3 years away from contending. If they’re willing to give up a superstar for minor leaguers, they are pretty much throwing in the towel for next season already. I’m sure they’d hype up the prospects to keep fans interested in the team, but we all know this deal would make the Padres much weaker in the short run. I wasn’t exactly expecting them to win the World Series next season, but it’s always a little disheartening when you can rule out a championship in mid-November.

The Padres were the first team in yesterday’s amateur draft to select a high schooler. They picked Donovan Tate with the #3 overall pick in the first round. Tate is an outfielder from Cartersville, Georgia. Tate is an all-around great athlete. Not only is he a top baseball prospect, but he’s also ranked among the top 100 high school football recruits in the country. Some of you might remember his father, former NFL running back Lars Tate. Donovan played safety, so you know he’s got to be fast. In fact, he’s one of the fastest kids in the draft this year, but his game is so much more than that. He also hits for power and has a cannon for an arm in the outfield. There are two downsides to Tate: he needs to take more pitches at the plate and he isn’t sure that he wants to play pro baseball just yet. He might still end up choosing college football, where he’s been recruited by North Carolina and Michigan, among many others I’m sure. If he chooses football, it’ll be another early pick wasted by the Padres.

Jake Peavy is looking to get back to .500 with a win tonight against the Diamondbacks. Peavy will be going for his third straight victory, while the Padres will try to avenge their first loss in 11 games. Their 10 game winning streak is the longest of the season and pulled them up from the bottom of the dumpster in the NL West up to a respectable .500 ballclub.

Just two weeks ago it seemed inevitable that the Padres would be dumping Peavy this season in exchange for some young talent and probably some cash, but now it might be possible that the Padres actually make a run at this season and try to pull off a division title.
