Rumors are flying around that the Padres are trying to work a deal with the Chicago White Sox and Los Angeles Angels that would send our franchise’s top player, Adrian Gonzalez, to the White Sox, Paul Konerko to the Angels, and a bunch of White Sox and Angels prospects to the Padres. In other words, the Padres lose their lone all star caliber player for a bunch of guys who probably haven’t played in the majors before.
I hate these kinds of deals, if for no other reason than the fact that it usually means a team is at least 2-3 years away from contending. If they’re willing to give up a superstar for minor leaguers, they are pretty much throwing in the towel for next season already. I’m sure they’d hype up the prospects to keep fans interested in the team, but we all know this deal would make the Padres much weaker in the short run. I wasn’t exactly expecting them to win the World Series next season, but it’s always a little disheartening when you can rule out a championship in mid-November.
