If Favre Retires, Do Favre Jets Items Become Collectible?

A friend asked me an interesting question this morning. If Brett Favre retires, will the Jets items bearing his name from this season become collectible. For the answer to this, we’ll have to look to the past. There are actually very few examples to choose from that fit the criteria I’m looking for. Joe Montana finished off his career with the Chiefs, but he was there for more than a season, so that doesn’t really count. Michael Jordan also spent more than a season with the Wizards, so we can’t count him. O.J. Simpson finished off his career with a couple seasons in San Francisco, but we can’t count him because of that whole stabbing thing (that, and I heard he doesn’t take too kindly to people who collect his things). I guess we’ll have to look farther back, to the time of Ruth. Babe Ruth played for the Boston Braves and the Brooklyn Dodgers towards the end of his career. Items from those years are very collectible, despite the fact that they might not be as old as his Yankees or Red Sox stuff, although the Red Sox collectibles are even more collectible due to the circumstances of his leaving, the beginning of the curse, and perhaps the greatest story in baseball history.

Only time will tell how collectors feel about Brett Favre’s Jets collectibles. One thing that is important is to make sure the item can be correctly dated to this year, so there is no question that it was produced during the year when Favre was actually on the team.
