Why Didn’t They Just Punt The Ball?

I’m so angry at the Patriots right now, I can barely stop my hands from shaking to make this post. They blew a 13 point lead with less than 5 minutes to go in the game. That’s not something I’m used to seeing from them. It’s something I’d expect from the Buffalo Bills. I haven’t felt this disappointed in my team since the Super Bowl loss to the Giants.

Here’s what really made me angry: on a drive when the Patriots main goal should have been running time off the clock, the Pats passed the ball on a down that obviously called for a running play. It was 3rd down and short. Sure, the Colts were expecting a run, but it didn’t really matter if they stopped the Patriots. The clock still would have gone all the way down to 2 minutes and the Pats would have punted the ball and Peyton and co. would have had less than 2 minutes to go 70-80 yards. Instead, the Pats threw an incomplete pass on 3rd down, stopping the clock, then went for it on 4th down and didn’t convert. That gave the Colts one play plus 2 minutes to go 30 yards, which is something that offense can do in their sleep when they’re clicking, and boy were they clicking at the end of the game last night.
