The iPod Touch adds a large amount of potential that just wasn’t possible with the old iPod and iPod Video players. There are all sorts of software programs that you can load on the Touch to make it useful at the workplace. Geekpreneur has the run-down on a few of these programs.
Here’s the “official” video of Steve Jobs unveiling the Apple iPhone. I swear this is totally, 100% real:

A market research firm has released the results of a study they’ve conducted which shows iTunes sales are up nearly 84% since last year. That contradicts an earlier report from Forrester Research that was misinterpreted by the media.
It’s unclear what caused the misinterpretation of the Forrester report. I have yet to see exactly what it was that got misinterpreted, which leads me to believe Forrester released a half-assed survey to the press because they thought it showed something big, such as the 65% decrease in iTunes sales that was reported, even though a more careful report shows us otherwise.

Despite all that hype about the Playstation 3 and Nintendo Wii, not to mention the 1 year old Xbox 360, the iPod is still the most popular gift this Christmas. Sales of iPod units are expected to reach 17 million this holiday season. That’s an astounding 8 percent of people polled by CNBC’s Holiday Central survey.
The 17 million figure falls right in the middle of Wall Street estimates, so don’t go rushing out to buy Apple stock. I predict that iPod sales will have its strongest growth among younger girls, including “tweeners”. Prices have come down far enough that parents are comfortable forking over $100 to $200 to shut up those annoying spoiled brats they’ve raised.

A report by Forrester Research claims iTunes sales are way down, as reported by The Register. The analysis of credit card data over 27-months indicates a 65% decrease in monthly revenue.
The numbers are being refuted by many in the blogosphere, claiming that the month by month numbers show steady buy inconsistant sales. That fluctuation by month should be expected, they say, because iTunes sales will naturally be higher during certain parts of the year, just as sales of flip flops are likely higher in June than in November.
So who’s right about iTunes revenue? It’s hard to tell. Apple is notoriously secret with their revenue data, showing the public only the information they have to because they are a public company regulated by the SEC. An iTunes sales drop could be easily covered up with increased iPod sales revenue. Perhaps next quarter’s earning statement will give us some more info.

An Apple source has leaked news that the company will introduce 3 new iPod models during 2007. We assume that at least 2 of these new models will actually be new generations of already existing iPods. There has been much speculation about the possibility of a true video iPod, with a video screen taking up the entire front face of the device. Such a device would likely utilize a touchscreen.

Going on a long trip with no chance to recharge your iPod? I’ve found three very good tips for extending your iPod’s battery life:
Turn off the backlight, or at least have it turn off in 2 or 5 seconds. Do not leave it on all the time. Settings > Backlight Timer > Off
Use Smart Playlists. The scroll wheel navigation uses battery power.
Turn down the volume. This one is pretty obvious. It’s also better for your ears.

Proposed changes in Australian law could be bad news for iPod owners. The new laws would lower the standard of proof for copyright infringement, and additionally would make such offenses a criminal offense. That’s much different than current American laws, which require an infringer to actually be sharing the music with other people and even then is just a civil offense. That means fines, not jail time.
Shame on any Aussie politician who favors this legislation. They are selling out their own people to the lobbyists funded by the music and movie industries.

Good news for iPod flyers. They’re the people who turn their iPod on when they arrive at the airport and don’t turn it off until they pick up their luggage at their destination. Thanks to a deal Apple is making with select airlines, they’ll be able to enjoy that iPod even more during the flight.
The deal will allow passengers to plug their iPod into their seat, so it will charge while they’re flying. In addition, on some planes in some classes they will be able to view videos from the iPod Video on their seat back displays.
The deal includes select flights on Air France, Continental, Delta, Emirates, KLM, and United; and will begin in mid 2007.
