The final price tag on the Florida Marlins new retractable roof stadium will be in the neighborhood of $2.4 billion. The Marlins are fronting a small portion of that total, with the rest of the money coming from bonds and local tax revenues. This stadium should end up being the most expensive baseball stadium ever built, which is astounding considering the Marlins meager attendance figures and team payroll. If people aren’t coming to the current stadium, will they really come to a new stadium? Maybe it’s not the crappy venue that’s bringing attendance numbers down, but rather a team that is inconsistent year in and year out. Each time we’ve had a world champion, management has sold off the better parts of the club in the offseason. How can fans get behind a team when success on the field means the owners get to cash in by selling our favorite players for magic beans?
