It’s no secret that the Lions could use help at just about every position on defense. Lucky for them, they have an additional pick in the 1st round other than their #1 overall. At #19, Sports Illustrated is predicting the Lions will go with defensive end Everette Brown out of Florida State. Brown will be an instant upgrade at 6′4″ and 250+ pounds, and I think the Lions would be getting good value for their pick if Brown is still around at this point in the 1st round.
Jim Schwartz does not want to be anything like his predecessor, Matt Millen. That’s why Sports Illustrated thinks the Lions will choose offensive tackle Andre Smith from Alabama instead of Matthew Stafford from Georgia with the first pick of the 2009 NFL draft. The Lions could use Stafford, but picking a proven lineman is an almost sure-fire way to build back an organization that won exactly zero games this season. Millen was best-known for picking wide receivers with top picks every year, despite the lack of a decent quarterback to throw to them, or a decent line to protect that not-yet-decent quarterback. You’ve got to build these teams from the foundation up, and Andre Smith is a strong foundation player.
The Lions are obviously looking over all of their options as they search for a head coach that can lead them to a win next season, but as of now the the top candidate is Cowboys offensive coordinator Jason Garrett. Garrett was unable to get his offense to lead the Cowboys into the playoffs this season, which makes him a great choice for a team that hasn’t won a game since 2007.
